What is Balayage?

What is Balayage? Everything you need to know about this colour technique that will NEVER go down in history!

When we first heard about Balayage, it was a hair game changer. No longer did we have to sit, head in foils, for what felt like three days only to end up with hair so stripy it brought to mind images of Nicole Richie circa 2003. No, because Balayage is the hair dye trend that changed everything.

Ok, so don’t worry you ladies that do get highlights, we would never let you walk out stripy!

But there is a reason why we at Solace specialise in this hair colouring technique and why it’s one of our top services our guests opt for.

Originating from France the word ‘Balayage’ in French means ‘sweep’’ and this colour technique is very much that.

But what is it exactly?

Balayage is all about that sun-kissed, low-maintenance finish. It’s perfect for our busy lifestyles, as the root colour is normally your base colour (or similar) and the ends are seamlessly lightened to have a blended, chic ‘lived in colour look’. After your first full balayage service your next salon visit will just be for a toner or for a balayage refreshing service to lift the balayage higher.

Balayage works with the individual’s haircut and natural hair growth patterns as well as the variance of tones in the hair, for a totally bespoke finish. Because it’s hand-painted, your colourist can choose the placements to best complement your haircut, skin and features so it looks really natural rather than actually coloured.

Balayage really is so diverse in the fact anyone can get balayage… from dark, light, short or long hair there is the perfect balayage for you. Let’s have a look at the different types of balayage.

What is the difference between ombre, dip dye and balayage?

Ombré – Ombre hair gives light and shade. The idea is you see a seamless, gradual colour change from darker to lighter. Think lived-in, beachy hair.

Dip Dye – A much more edgy look. Two toned colouring… imagine dipping the ends of your hair into a pot of paint.

Balayage – Colour that is painted on with a brush and paddle board to create natural, sun-kissed looking highs and lows – giving the hair a beautiful dimension.

If you were to say you’ve never googled ‘Jessica Alba hair’ before, you’d be lying. The girl has never stepped a strand wrong. Her honey balayage is super flattering and is the kind of colour that will suit everyone.

Suki Waterhouse proves balayage also looks great on lighter hair. We love #avedablondes and we love the results we can achieve for our blonde guests. From lived in brondes to bright bombshell blondes we customise the perfect blonde for you!

Bow down to the new queen of balayage. Jessica Biel’s glossy waves at the Emmy’s are so chic and sophisticated yet naturally sunkissed.
